Industrial Fish & Fisheries:
The Industrial Fish & Fisheries, a vocational course for
entrepreneurship development, was introduced with UGC
assistance in 1995 in Pragiyotish College for the first time
in the N.E. Region in India. As per UGC guide lines, it has
been attached to the Dept. of Zoology and the teachers from
the core department have extended their valuable service along
with the part-time teachers. The department has been run
successfully for the last 12 years. Many students who have
passed examinations with this subject have already developed
their own entrepreneurship.
There is an aquarium manufacturing unit in the Dept. of IFF,
which has supplied aquariums to the Principal and many other
faculty members.
The Dept of IFF has introduced a Two-month diploma course in
Aquarium manufacturing and Maintenance.
(ii) Functional English :
The Department of Functional English, which is attached to the
core Department of English, is funded by the University Grants
Commission for the introduction of FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH as a
vocational subject at the First Degree Level in Pragiyotish
College. Functional English, a job-oriented course, is
designed to provide learners with fundamental training in
effective writing, speaking and presentation for specific
cimmunicative purposes. Its primary objective is to motivate
undergraduate learners to explore promising avenues of
self-employment and entrepreneurship in the fast changing
economic scenario in India. After successful completion of the
course, the enterprising learners will be able to vigorously
pursue careers such as (i) Receptionist, (ii) Salesman, (iii)
Private Tutor in Conversational English, (iv) Travel Agent,
(v) Tourist Guide, (vi) Air Hostess, (vii) Announcer, (viii)
Radio or TV News Reader, (ix) Radio or TV Commentator, (x)
Eompere, (xi) Reporter, etc.) or any careers the demand
effective communicative skills in English.
The Department of Functional English has a small well-stocked
library, language laboratory with audio-visual aids such as a
high quality Multimedia Computer with recording facilities, a
very high quality music system-cum-taoe recorder, a
printer-cum-copier-cum-scanner and a good number of recorded
texts in the form of cassettes and C.D.s.
Functional English can be opted for as one of the elective
subjects. In addition to this, the Department of Functional
English will conduct the following crash courses: (i) Spoken
English, (ii) Translation and Creative Writing, and (iii)
Remedial English Grammar (iv) English for Job Seekers.
These courses are open to any learner of any institution. The
learners have to pay fees for each course.
Moreover, for the benefit of the students of Pragyotish
College the department organizes the following activities: (i)
group discussion, (ii) debating, (iii) mock interview, (iv)
mock press conference, (v) mock Parliament session, etc.
(iii) Tourism and Travel Management :
This is a three-year vocational course which may be offered by
a student as one of his/her optional subjects.
(iv) Computer Course:
Pragiyotish College aims at hundred percent computer literacy
in the college. Apart from Computer Science as an elective
subject, the college has introduced a couple of crash courses
for basic computer education. Moreover, students having some
computer background may avail themselves of advance courses in
computer science. Students will have to pay extra fee of Rs.
500/- for a three-months certificate course in computer basics
and multilingual technology.
(v) Information Technology:
This course was introduced in the last academic session and
receives tremendous response from the students.
(vi) Biotechnology (Subject to
approval of G.U.)
(vii) New programmes
(i) BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration).
(ii) BCA (Bachelor of Computer Application) beginning from
2006.
(iii) PGDCA (Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Application) -
Diploma Course.
REMEDIAL COURSES
Remedial crash courses in some selected subject will be
conducted in Pragiyotish College especially for SC and ST
students. General category students can also get the benefit
of the courses.
