THE ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE                           REPORT (IQAR)

 

                                            OF THE IQAC 2008

 

Part – A

 

Action Plan :

 

1.      To complete all the works started in 2007.

2.      To start B.Sc (IT) programme.

3.      To start BMC programme.

4.      To start classes in Kathak along with Satriya dance under career oriented courses.

5.      To improve the security position in the college.

6.      To improve the power position in the college in view of the erratic supply of power.

7.      To start major course in e-commerce in the commerce faculty.

 

 

Outcome at the end of the year :

 

 

1.      Some of the workes started in 2007 are partially completed.

2.      B.Sc (IT) is already started

3.      BMC is also already started.

4.      Kathak dance as a career oriented programme is also started

5.      We have given vigilance part of the college as a priority for generating a sense of secuirity to our students.

6.      Power position needs to be improved.

7.      Major course in E-Commerce is started in the B.Com programme.

 

 

 Part-B

 

1.      Activities Reflecting the Goals and Objectives of the Institution :

The following activities have been undertaken for reflecting the goals and objectives of the college.

a)      In order to acquaint the students with the practical aspect of the academic course of studies, the different departments of the college have conducted surveys, field studies and workshops. Seminars were also held by individual departments from time to time. Some departments have also arranged seminars and conferences with the NGO’s and government departments. To acquaint the students regarding government plans and programmes in relation to their course of studies.

b)      The seminars, surveys, field studies, workshop etc. conducted by the different departments, no. of candidates qualified for NET/SLET, Research Projects, No. of research scholars, citation index of the faculty members, honours/awards received by faculty members and student achievement of different departments are as follows :

 

 

I) Department of Anthropology

 

1.      Seminar held

a)      A Talk on ‘Relevance of Anthropology in Modern Society’ by Dr. A.N.M. Irshad Ali, Gauhati University on 10th September,2008

b)      Socio-Economic Condition amongst the caste people of Sualkuchi Kamrup.

 

2. Field Studies

a)      TDC 2nd year students participated in field study under guidance of Mrs. Manjula Dutta and Mrs. Chandrani Sarma in Sualkuchi.

b)      TDC 3rd year Major students participated in the field work under the guidance of Mrs. Manjula Dutta and Mrs. Chandrani Sarma in Dholbama village and in Sualkuchi.

Resource Person : Dr. Usharanjan Bhatttacharjee (GU), Manik Das (noted Assamese writer), Gautam Bhattacharjee (Recitationist), Tushar Kanti Saha (Editor, Sanlap), Sri N. N. Thakuria (Sr. Lecturer, Deptt. Of Functional English, Pragjyotish College). 48 Students attended from different Colleges of Guwahati and the Bengali Deptt. Of GU and Certificate handed over to each of them.

VI) Department of Computer Science

 

  1. Seminars held :

The seminars were organized by the department of Computer Science,

a)      A seminar entitled “A seminar on Information Technology, its Role & Impact in the present Scenario” was organized on the 9th January,2008 at the Seminar Hall of the College premises. Dr. (Mrs) Anjana Kakoti Mahanta, Professor & Head, Dept. of Computer Science, Gauhati University delivered a lecture on Data Mining.

b)      A seminar entitled “One step with our developing Assam in IT Sector” was organized by Mr. Abhijit Barua of Convergence Software Solutions, the publisher of the Computer Magazine named “CONVERGENCE”. He also distributed the free copies of the first inaugurating issue of the said magazine to the audience on 2nd Sept.,2008.

 

  1. Workshop :

Two workshops were conducted as follows :

a)      One day workshop entitled “Linux Administration” was conducted by Authorities of the Red Hat Linux Corporation, Guahati on the 6th Sept.,2008

b)      One day workshop entitled “Java Programming Concepts” was conducted by the Authorities of NIIT, Guwahati on the 15th October,2008.

 

  1. Research Projects Completed :

Mr. Pranab kr. Goswami has completed his M.Phil. Research project entitled “Computer Aided Evaluation and Analysis of Clinical Immuno-Radiaometric-Assay (IRMA) and Radio-Immuno-Assay (RIA) of Thyroid Hormones in Human Semen using Video amma Counter in the Endocrenology Department of Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

Dr. Amarjyoti Duta has completed his CSIR Research Project entitled “Study on I-Convergent Sequence of Fuzzy Real-number.”

One Research Scholar named Mr. Masih Saikia has got his Ph.D. final Registration under Gauhati University in the month of November,2008.

The following five students having Major in Computer Science in their B.Sc. Final Examination has secured positions in the Gauhati University ranking.

VII) Department of Economics

 

1.      Seminars held

A Talk was held on ‘Oil in Assam : Facts & Fallacies’ on 13th Sept.,2008. Keynotes Speaker Sri Subhash Goswami, Retd. Oil Technocrat delivered the talk at the Seminar Hall.

 

 

2.      Number of Research Scholars :

Ira Das, Sr. Lecturer is pursuing Ph.D. from IIT Guwahati since January,2006. The topic is ‘Rural Urban Divide & Linkages : An Empirical Analysis in Assam’.

Three Alumni of the Dept. who passed out with Major in TDC Part-III in 2007 got jobs in Govt. & Non-Govt. institution

          XIX) Department of Sanskrit

 

1.      Seminar

Seminars organized in the Department of Sanskrit, Pragjyotish College during the year 2008

a)      Sanskrit Day observed jointly with the Assam Sanskrit Mahasabha at Sanskrit Department of Gauhati University in 16/8/08. Dr. Upen Ch. Goswami former Head of the Deptt. Of Assamese, GU has delivered a lecture on ‘Necessity of Sanskrit Study at Present Time”.

b)      Teachers Day observed in the Department on 5/9/08. Dr. Anjana Neog, Head of the Department of Philosophy, Pragjyotish College, delivered a talk regarding ‘Life and Philosophy of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan’

c)      On the occasion of ‘Swagata Sabha’ of Sanskrit Department, Dr. Geeta Baruah, Head of the Department of English, Handique Girls’ College, Guwahati, has delivered a lecture on “Moral Teaching in Sanskrit” on 30/09/08 and on the same day departmental Wall Magazine entitled ‘Jnanashree’ inaugurated by Dr. Geeta Baruah.

 

2.      Workshop

During the year 2008 an workshop on Sanskrit teaching has been organized by the Department and started w.e.f. 03/06/08 for a period of three months (June,2008 to August,2008)

4.      Honours/Awards received by the faculty members :

One, Dr. (Mrs.) Indira Saikia Bora, HOD, received Rs. 500/- (Rupees five hundred only) for best Article (Paper) presented in the “World Sanskrit Conference” from 5-9 April,2001, held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi (under the auspicious of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, vide Govt. letter No. 2008/09/174, Dtd. 15/10/08

 

5.      Students achievement and awards

a)      After completion of the workshop 13 students appeared in the first part Examination of ‘Bhasa Pravesa’ conducted by ‘Sanskrit Bharati’, Uttara Assam Pranta. The percentage of success as follows :

            First Division : 38.57%

            Second Division : 30.8%

            Third Division : 30.8%

b)      A Sanskrit Drama “Kasya Desasya” has been staged at Gauhati     University Auditorium on the occasion of Sanskrit Day on 16/09/08 by the students viz. Himashree Deka, Miss Pampi Bodo and Miss Pallavi Kalita are students of third year Degree Major. The drama was appreciated highly and adjudged as the best drama amongs the staged drama during the occasion.

c)      In the Annual sports of Pragjyotish Collee students of Sanskrit Department have participated and own prizes as below :

i)        Sri Jyotish Sarma of Degree Second Year has owned three first prizes in 100 mtr., 200 mts and Marathan races.

ii) The group of Miss Chayanika Devi HS 1st Yr. Got first prize in   Kabadi

iii) Miss Ankita Rabha attended a ‘Basic Leadership Camp’ Orissa, Bhubaneswar, Regimental No. ASW/06/11411, Unit 60, Assam Girls BNNCC and get certificate and scored ‘B’ grading.

 

 

          XX) Department of Zoology

Seminars for 3rd Yr. Major students are held regularly as per the Syllabus of GU and outside the Sullabus, topics related to Zoological importance.

e)      Genetic Engineering : A tool for Development, Mr. Manas Dewan, TDC 3rd Yr. (Major) on 27/9/08, guided by Dr. Jayanta Deka.

f)        Induced Breeding, Mr. Nipom Kalita, TDC 3rd Yr. (Major) on 4/10/08, guided by Dr. Makibur Rahman.

 

2.      Field study/excursion

Field trip/Excursion are arranged for the 3rd Yr. Major to different advanced Laboratories/Institutions/Universities as per syllabus of GU and for the Pass course student Field trip are arranged for different Wildlife Sanctuary, National Park.

a)      Kolkatta (visited Calcutta University, Science City, Museum, Zoo) & Digha on 11/12/08 by TDC 3rd Yr Student

 

3.      Research Project

Newly implemented : A major research project funded by UGC, “An investigation on insects damaging medicinal plants in Assam”. Principal investigator : Dr. (Mrs.) Antara Baruah, HOD, Zoology, from December,2008 to December2011

 

 

 

4.      Honours/Awards received by the faculty members

a)      Dr. (Mrs.) Angur Begum was awarded Ph.D. in the year 2008, Topic : Ocular lenticular structures of certain vertebrate with special reference to cornea, lens and retina”

b)      Mrs. Seema Kaur was awarded M.Phil. in the year 2008. Topic : A study on the effect of Neem Formulation on the Ecology of Callosobruchu Chinensis.

c)      Dr. Makibur Rahman was awarded Ph.D. in the year 2008. Topic : Biology and Fisheries of Tenualosa Ilisha (Har) in the Brahmaputra river system.

To prepare the students for appearing in the final examination of the University every department ranges Unit Test at regular intervals. And general test examinations are held for different classes every year.

      A total grant of Rs.2, 20,000.00 have been sanctioned from UGC.

For generating funds the College has initiated the following processes :

a)                  Selling books published by the College.

b)  Fund collected from different agencies for holding conferences,   seminars, meetings, examinations etc.

c) Collaborative programmes with C-DAC.

 

11. Detail of Departments getting SAP, CONSIST, DST, FIST etc., assistance/recognition :

Our college did not et any special assistance though some software equipments have been provided.

The college has imparted the following community services during the year 2006-

During the period 01/03/08 to 30/06/08 several new steps have been taken for improvement in the library service. These steps are taken for the progress in various fields of readers’ interest.

a)      The Library Advisory Committee has taken a major decision for revitalization of the library.

Without audio visual teaching learning tools modern day education is incomplete. This is why, the library advisory committee has decided to spend some money for purchase of valuable and student friendly audio-visual tools like CDs and other similar materials.

b)      In view of the present trend of the higher education, colleges should have to concentrate more on need base education. This college has already started new courses in Post-Graduate level and library services have been sufficient expanded to meet the needs and requirements of the students as well as faculty members.
