THE ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE                           REPORT (IQAR)

 

                                            OF THE IQAC 2007

 

Part – A

 

Action Plan :

 

1.      Computerization of library service

2.      Construction of the 1st floor & 2nd floor of Girls’ Hostel

3.      Completion of the BCA building

4.      Construction of boundary walls.

5.      Introduction of new subjects like BBA.

 

Outcome at the end of the year :

 

1.      Regarding computerization of library we are yet to register the expected mark. Still we are moving onward despite all the hurdles.

2.      Regarding computerization of the admission process we have made some progress, however small.

3.       For full computerization of the admission process we have made some progress, but we do not think that is enough.

4.      We have been able to complete the ground floor of the girl’s hostel building. This year we think, we will be able to go for the 1st floor.

5.      We have taken steps for opening of some new subjects, but for lack of university’s unconcern and govt’s apathy we have not been able to proceed much.

 

 

Part-B

 

1.      Activities Reflecting the Goals and Objectives of the Institution :

The following activities have been undertaken for reflecting the goals and objectives of the college.

a)      In order to acquaint the students with the practical aspect of the academic course of studies, the different departments of the college have conducted surveys, field studies and workshops. Seminars were also held by individual departments from time to time. Some departments have also arranged seminars and conferences with the NGO’s and government departments. To acquaint the students regarding government plans and programmes in relation to their course of studies.

b)      The seminars, surveys, field studies, workshop etc. conducted by the different departments, no. of candidates qualified for NET/SLET, Research Projects, No. of research scholars, citation index of the faculty members, honours/awards received by faculty members and student achievement of different departments are as follows :

 

 

I) Department of Anthropology

1.      Seminar held :departmental :

(1)    A talk on “Palaeolithic tool industry of Garo Hills, Meghalaya” by Dr. Jonali Devi, Cotton College.

2.      Field Study :

(1)    Participated in preliminary sensus schedule survey conducted at Higher Secondary level in different parts of Guwahati city under the guidance of Mrs. Manjula Dutta in 2007.

(2)    TDC 2nd year students participated in field study under guidance of Mrs. Manjula Dutta and Mrs. Chandrani Sarma in Maina Khurung Village.

(3)    TDC 3rd year Major students participated in the field work under the guidance of Mrs. Manjula Dutta and Mrs. Chandrani Sarma in Dholbama Village.

VIII) Department of Economics

 

1 Seminars held :

a)      A Talk was held on “Indian Railways- In the beginning of 21st Century” on 11th October,2007. Keynote Speaker Sri Jyoti Dev Goswami, Chief Commercial Manager, N.F. Railway delivered the talk at the Seminar hall.

c)                  The Department of Economics is collaboration with Pragjyotish College Teachers’ Unit (PCTU) organized the Bhabananda Deka Memorial Lecture on his first death anniversary on 4th December, 2007 at the Seminar Hall. Prof. Madhurjyya Prasad Bezbaruah of Gauhati University delivered the Lecture on the topic “Look East Policy and North East.”

 

  1. Surveys :

The major students under the supervision of the Faculty members conducted a socio-economic survey on 23rd December,2007. The survey was conducted at villages in Rani Block near Assam Meghalaya border.

 

  1. No. of Research Scholars :

Ira Das, Senior Lecturer is pursuing Ph.D. from IIT, Guwahati since Januray, 2006. The topic is ‘Rural Urban Divide & Linkages : An Empirical Analysis in Assam”.

 

  1. Honours/Awards received by the Faculty members :

Atanu Kr. Chowdhury, Head of the Department was invited as an Observer to attend the 4th SAESM (South Asian Economic Students Meet) held at Colombo, Sri Lanka from 21 to 23rd February,2007. His observation of the Colombo Meet was published in the Souvenir of the 5th SAESM held at New Delhi in March,2008.

 

 

IX) Department of Education

 

1.      Seminar held :

a)                  Distance Education in India with special reference to Assam on 31-8-2007 (Siddhartha Sarma)

X) Department of Geography

 

  1. Seminar Held : Five seminars were held for students..

 

  1. Field Study :

    1. Physical and Cultural study of Pokhara & Kathmandu Valley in 17th to 26th October,2007. Total thirty students were there and they were guided by Dr. J. Patgiri, Mrs. D. Baruah, Mrs. T. Buragohain.

 

  1. Surveys :

Socio-economic survey at Hajo in 6th & 7th Dec.,2007. Twenty five students attended the survey. They were guided Mrs. D. Baruah.

Three faculty members are pursuing research for their Ph.D. Degree

5.      Citation index of the faculty members and impact factor : Various eminent writers have quoted from books and essays of Mr. Paramananda Majumdar who is a senior lecturer of the department. An Assamese Daily ‘EDIN’ wrote an editorial highlighting authors view points in his recent book ‘CHETANA PRABAH’ Dr. S. Devi cited reference from his book ‘PRABAD-PRATIBAD’, Mr. I. Deori cited reference from his book ‘DAINI, JYOTISH ARU ALOUKIK CIKITSHYA’ Mr. K. Tati also cited reference from the same book.

 

6.      Honours/Awards received by the faculty members :

 

a)      Mr. Paramananda Majumdar received ‘SITANATH BRAHMA CHOUDHARY BATA-2006’ award from ‘ASSAM SAHITYA SABHA’, Award received in February,2007.

 

7. Students achievement and awards :

Students from the department have own various sports and quiz competition all though there is no specific achievement.

 

 

XI) Department of Geology :

 

1.      Seminar Held on :

a)      Popular talk on “RS and GIS and its application to Geoscienero and natural resources”, held on 28-4-2007.

b)      Popular talk on “Paleo-geography of NE India and Geoparks”, held on 8-12-2007 and delivered lecture by Dr. U. K. Mishra, Director, Science and Technology, IT and Disaster management Division, North Eastern Council.

c)      Popular talk on “The Caves of Meghalaya and the associated Tourism Potential” held on 5-12-2007 and delivered lecture by B. D. K. Dalay, General Secretary, Meghalaya Adventures Association

 

2.      Field Study :

(a)     Geoglogical field studies in the Siwalik exposures in and around Deharudun and Mussorie; Industrial visit to Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun (during November,2007) 3rd year pass and major student

 

3.      Honours/Awards :

a)      Priyam Barthakur, Sr. Lecturer of the Department awarded the Ph.D. Degree by the Gauhati University on the topic :Sedimentological study of the rocks occurring in and around Mawsynram,Meghalaya.

b)      Manjit Kr. Mazumdar, Sr. Lecturer invited by the former President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to the Rashtrapati Bhavan on 10th April,2007 for accepting a ‘Vision Document on Initiating a Geopark Network in India’

c)      Manjit Kr. Mazumdar was the only Indian delegate to be invited to present papers at a Geopark Conference held at Langkawi (Malaysia) during November,2007.

 

4.      Student Achievement

XII) Department of Hindi

XIII) Department of History

 

1.      Seminar :

a)                  A students’ seminar was held on 24/07/2007 the Topic ‘Rudra Sinha : The Greatest Ahom Ruler”, Students of Major classes of 2nd & 3rd year participated in it. It was presided over by the HOD, History Ms. Nandini Moral

 

2.      Field Study :

Study Tour to Ambari Excavation site on 07/08/2007. Students of all the three years of History, both General and Major classes made a study tour to the Ambari excavation sites and took notes of the findings. All three faculty members of the Dept. and guest faculty Ms. Gargee Sharma accompanied the students.

 

 

 

XIV) Department of Mathematics

 

1.      Seminar Topic :

a.       ‘The Concept of Liberation for TDC 1st Yr. (Major) students on 24th August,2007

b.      ‘The concept of Freedom and Responsibility’ for TDC 2nd Yr. (Major) students on 22nd August,2007

2.      Students Achievements :

Miss Monimi Das of TDC 1st year has persued a Course in Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapith, Lucknow and was placed in First Division.

 

 

XVII) Department of Physics

 

1.      Research Scholar :

Two students secured first class in Physics (Major) in TDC Part-III (1+1+1) Exam,2007 under GU : (1) Mr. Aziz Khan & (2) Ms. Kavita Das

 

XVIII) Department of Statistics

 

1.      Seminar held

A student seminar on the topic ‘Probability’ is presented by Anjan Sarma, on 28-11-2007

Rijusmita Das, Reema Das & Hiranya Barua were presented paper in the seminar

 

2.      Field Study :

Field study was done in the College itself by taking the results for the year 2004-2006 both for Science and Arts stream in the year 2007.

 

3.      Student Achievement :

Anjan Sarma (Arts) secured 2nd Class 1st position in TDC Part-III Exam, under GU.

 

4.      Surveys :

A survey was done on the socio-economic condition of the people of the neighbouring areas of Pragjyotish College and the Income of the parents of the students of Pragjyotish College.

 

 

XIX) Department of Sanskrit

 

1.      Seminar held

Seminars held in the Sanskrit Dcepartment of Pragjyotish College are as bellow :

a)                  A seminar on ‘Veda : A Study’ was held on 28-12-07 where Dr. Manjula Devi, Reader of Gauhati University, Department of Sanskrit had delivered a valuable lecture on the subject.

b)                  In another occasion on 26-09-2007 Dr. Apurba Chandra Borthakuria former head of the Department of Sanskrit, Gauhati University had delivered a talk on ‘Sanskrit Vyãkarana Siksãyãh Proyojanam’.

 

2.      Workshop :

Workshop organized in the Department during the year 2007 are :

A fifteen days Spoken Sanskrit Camp- ‘Sanskrit Sambhãsana Siviram’ Patronised by Sanskrit Bhãrati, Uttara Pranta from 03-08-07 to 18-08-07

4.      Students achievement and awards :

a)                  A Sanskrit Drama ‘Kasya Desasya’ has been staged at Vivekananda Kendra, Uzan Bazar, Guwahati on the occasion of National Sanskrit Day Programme on 18-09-2007 by the students viz. Miss Himashree Deka, Miss Pampi Bodo, Miss Pallavi Kalita are students of TDC 2nd Year (Major). The drama was appreciated highly and adjudged as the Best Drama among the staged drama during the occasion.

b)                  During the ‘Inter College Sanskrit Debating Competition’ held at Krishna Kanta Handique govt. Sanskrit College, Jalukbari, Guwahati on 17-12-07 students of third year Major viz Sri Pulakesh Sarma and Miss Prabhati Chakravorty had participated and received third prize.

 

 

XX) Department of Zoology

 

2.      Seminar held :

Seminars for 3rd year major students are held regularly as per the Syllabus of Gauhati University and outside the Syllabus, topic relating to Zoological importance :

c)                  Biodiversity and its conservation, Ms. Sayanti Chakravarty under the guidance of Dr. (Mrs.) Antara Baruah on 21-07-2007

d)                  Modern method of Bee keeping, Ms. Reena Adhikari under the guidance of Ms. Arati Devi on 28-07-2007

e)                  Pest & Pest Management, Ms. Meena Kumari under the guidance of Seema Kaur on 04-08-2007

f)                    Antigen-Antibody Interaction, Ms. Sheetal Chetri under the guidance of Dr. (Mrs.) Angur Begum on 18-08-2007

g)                  Energy Transudation in Mitochondria, Ms. Chandamitra Basumatary under the guidance of Dr. Jayanta Deka on 25-08-2007

h)                  Red Data Book, Ms. Fulora Tripura under the guidance of Dr. (Mrs) Antara Baruah on 08-09-2007.

 

3.      Field Study/Excursion : Field trip/Excursion are arranged for the 3rd year Maor to different advanced Laboratories/Institutions/Universities as per Syllabus of Gauhati Iniversity and for the Pass Course student field trip are arranged for different Wildlife Sanctuary, National Parks.

4.      Workshop/Orientation Course :

a)                  Orientation Course on Biodiversity & conservation was held on 12-09-2007 in collaboration with World Wildlife Fund (WWF)- India, Assam & Arunachal Pradesh State Office.

b)                  International reduction day was celebrated on 10-10-2007 in the Department of Zoology in collaboration with the Disaster Cell of Pragjyotish College & Assam State Disaster Management Cell.

 

5.      Survey :

The 3rd Year students surveyed the presence of difference animals and means of their conservation in different Wildlife Sanctuary, National parks.

a)                  On 01-0-2007, Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, Jorhat : In Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary the 3rd year Major student surveys the presence of primates, their behaviour and the conservation measures taken by the Assam Forest Officials

b)                  On 12-12-2007, Manas National Park : In Manas National Park, the 3rd Year Major as well as the 3rd General students surveys the presence of different animals, marked the tiger footprint, encountered the wild buffalo and rlephant and many other small species.

a)                  Selling books published by the College.

b)                  Fund generated from different agencies for holding conferences, seminars, meetings, examinations etc.

c)                  Collaborative programmes with C-DAC.

Our college did not get any special assistance though some software equipments have been provided.

 

12.  Community Services :

The college has imparted the following community services during the year 2006-

c)      NSS Camp

d)      Social services such as cleaning of the college campus and neighbourhood.

15. Improvement in the Library Services :

 

During the period 01/03/07 to 30/06/07 several new steps have been taken for improvement in the library service. These steps are taken for the progress in various fields of readers’ interest.

a)      The Library Advisory Committee has taken a major decision for revitalization of the library.

Without audio visual teaching learning tools modern day education is incomplete. This is why, the library advisory committee has decided to spend some money for purchase of valuable and student friendly audio-visual tools like CDs and other similar materials.

b)      In view of the present trend of the higher education, colleges should have to concentrate more on need base education. This college has already started new courses in Post-Graduate level and library services have been sufficient expanded to meet the needs and requirements of the students as well as faculty members.

During the year 2007, Annual Sports Week was held in the College. Students actively took part in both outdoor and indoor games. Outdoor games like football, volleyball, badminton, karate were held. Indoor games like carom, chess were also held.

Free education is given to meritorious students.

Plans for the next year:

 

1.      Taking step to start some new academic programmes, especially B.Sc (IT) and BMC.

2.      Concrete fencing of the college ponds for campus beautification.

3.      Construction of the 1st floor over the old boys hostel building for MA (Assamese) and MTM departments.

4.      To improve the academic climate in the college.

5.       Full internet connectivity in the college.

6.      To improve the power position in the college.
