Year: 2005
Part – I
Plan of
Action for the Year 2005
The plan of
action for the year 2005 is virtually similar to the one for
the year 2004. In fact our plan of action took a definite
shape and momentum after the NAAC visit to the college in
2003. The following suggestions of the Peer Team are taken
seriously, and action plan designed accordingly.
Main
suggestions of the Peer team: as highlighted
- Up
gradation of science labs.

Improvement of the library position and regular verification
of library stock.

Construction of women’s hostel.
- Up
gradation of computer Science labs.
- Methods of
interactive teaching to make learning quite interesting for
the students.

Inter-departmental collaboration in literature subjects.
- Regular
verification of college accounts.
- Teachers`
self-appraisal reports are to be insisted upon.
- Taking
step for students` feedback regarding the class and also
regarding the college.
- Meeting
with parents, teachers and alumni for reducing the dropout
problem, and also for improvement of examination results.
- Up
gradation of infrastructures and teaching aids for better
teaching- learning process.
TO realize the above-noted needs as focused by the Peer
Team the college has taken the following actions plans:
- IQAC has
been activated.
- All the
science labs are substantially improved.

Preliminary works are started for the construction of
women’s hostel.For this UGC assistance is sought.
- College
library is substantially improved. Partial computerization
of the library is worked out.
- Steps
taken to have self-appraisal reports from the teachers.
- Feedback
from the students collected.
- At least
one meeting in a year with the parents is instituted. These
meetings are convened by the individual departments.
- A good
number of staff meetings are held for the improvement of
teaching-learning.

Substantial improvement in the infrastructure of the college
is made in all levels.
- Computer
Science lab is considerably upgraded.
- Step is
taken to have a UGC network resource centre in the college.
- Step is
taken to improve the college campus for a working playground
for some specific sport events.
- Teachers
are motivated to have the required proficiency in computer.
At least 50% of our teachers are now computer-literates.
- Major
portion of the administrative works are computerized.
- Extensive
extension activities are encouraged amongst the students.

The following activities have
been undertaken for reflecting the goals and objectives of the
college.
1 (a) In order to acquaint the students of the college with
the practical and the socio-economic aspects as required in
the academic syllabi etc., the different departments held
seminars, surveys, field-studies, workshops etc. in the
different field of activities. While conducting these
seminars, surveys, field studies, workshop etc. various
government agencies and NGO’s were contacted for necessary
co-operation. While conducting these seminars, surveys,
workshop etc. importance was given particularly in
agriculture, cottage industries, self-help economic programmes
etc. specifically in rural areas.

Department of Anthropology:
a)
Seminars: A departmental seminar was held on the topic
‘Historical background of pre-historic Archaeology’ in the
year 2005. The lecture was delivered by Junali Devi, Senior
lecturer of Department of Anthropology, Cotton College,
Guwahati.
b)
Surveys: Participated in preliminary census survey
conducted at Higher Secondary level in Guwahati city.
c)
Field Studies :
i) Conducted field work for the study of social and economic
life of the rural plain Karbi in the villageHajonbari situated
near the urban center of Guwahati.
ii) Participated in fieldworks conducted at undergraduate
level for the study entitled ‘Analysis of the Socio-Economic
aspect and position of women among the traditional plain Karbi
community of NARAKASUR in the urban context of Guwahati city
of Assam.]
II.
Department of Assamese:
a)
Seminars : An international seminar was organized by
the Assamese department on 4th, 5th, 6th
November 2005 in collaboration with Asom Kalatirtha, Guwahati
on the topic ‘The Ramayana : Its impact on our life and
culture’.
b)
Field Study: A field study was organized for the
benefit of the students on 4th, 5th, 6th
November 2005.
c)
Workshop: A Recitation Workshop on Assamese Poetry was
organized on 28-05-05 in collaboration with Dalit Sahitya
Academy.
d)
A talk on ‘Women and Assamese Literature’ was delivered
by Dr. Sailen Bharali, Head and Ex-Jawaharlal Nehru Prof. of
Assamese department, Gauhati University on 09-04-05 Atulananda
Goswami, eminent short story writer and critic delivered a
talk on ‘Jogesh Dasar Galpa Alochana’ on 09-09-05.

Department of Botany :
a)
Seminars: On December 2005 a departmental seminar was
held on the topic “Mutation and its Role in Crop Improvement”.
The paper was presented by Mr. Shravan Jha, BSC 3rd
year Major student. The seminar was chaired by Dr. Arpana
Thakuria, HOD, Botany.
b)
Field Study: From 13th November to 18th
November 2005, teachers and students of Botany department went
to Shillong and Cherapunjee to study the vegetion and Ecology
of sub tropical conferous forest of Meghalaya, B.Sc 2nd
& 3rd year students were guided by Prof. (Mrs.)
S.Buragohain and Dr. R.K.Bora, lecturer of Botany department.
c)
Survey : Prof(Mrs) Ranee Das is surveying the
Cyanobacterial Flora of Greater Guwahati since 2002 – Prof. (Mrs)
S.Buragohain is surveying the ‘Exotic Flora of Angiosperms of
Greater Guwahati’ since 2002.
Dr. R.K.Bora is surveying the Orchids of Kokrajhar district
since May 2005.

Department of Chemistry:
a)
Seminars : A departmental seminar was held on 24th
September 2005 on the topics –
1) Stereo Chemistry.
2) Organic Reaction Mechanism
B.Sc. Major Students participated in the seminar.
b)
Field Study: A study tour to Forensic Science
Laboratory was arranged by the Department of Chemistry on 19th
December 2005. Three teachers of the department have guided
about 16 major students on the study tour.
c)
Talk : A popular scientific talk on “Forensic Science
in the service of Society” was organized by the Department of
Chemistry on 18th November 2005. The talk was
delivered by Dr. Swapan Kumar Datta, Deputy Director, Forensic
Science Laboratory, Guwahati

Department of Economics:
a)
Seminar : The Economic Planning Forum under department
of Economics conducted a socio-economic survey at Topatoli
village of Assam and two adjoining village – Umsiang Mongpodan
and Umsiang Miang of neighbouring Ribhoi district of Meghalaya.
A group of 30 Major students of TDC 2nd and 3rd
year participated in the programme which was held on 23rd
December 2005.

Department of Education
a)
Seminar: A two-day seminar on Parental Empowerment was
organized in the department of Education. Dr. B.R.Biz from
Punjab University, and Kuladhar Saikia, IGP, were the resource
persons in the seminar.
About 30 parents attended the seminar and a cordial
interaction took place among the parents and the resource
persons.

Seminar : About 10 departmental seminars were held
during the year 2005.

year on 29th November 2005. The survey was
supervised by the Faculty members.

Field Study : A local field trip to the Assam State
Museum was conducted on 18th October 2005 by the

Assamese – ‘ A critical study of Khulia Bhaoriya, Important
Folk Performing Art of North-East India – UGC – 2002-2005.
(iii) Ms. Dula Saikia of the Sanskrit department has
undertaken a project name ‘Language Information Service’.
(iv) Prof. J.Patgiri, Head of the department of Geography
has undertaken a research project on Impact and influence of
Satra Institution to the people of Brahmaputra Valley.
(v) A UGC sponsored Minor Research Project has been
undertaken by Manjit Majumdar of Geology department from 1st

b. (i) Prof. Jyotirmoy Sengupta, Head of the department of
Bengali, completed and submitted on August 2005 his research
project titled ‘Asamer Bangla Little Magazine Chotogalpar
Prakhyapat O Kramabikas (1971-2000). He was guided by Dr.
Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Assam University, Silchar.
(ii) Prof. J.Patgiri, Head of the Department of Geography
completed his research project on ‘Socio-economic condition of
Tribal Population of Undivided Goalpara district.

28. Financial aid to students.
There is a special fund to provide financial aid
to poor and needy students. A good number of students are
given financial aid directly by the college.
29. Activities and support from the Alumni
Association:
A section of alumni is engaged in helping the
college in kind, if not in cash. Some of them are helping the
college to develop the fish ponds and the college campus by
earth filling works.
30. Activities and support from Parent-Teacher
Association:
In this part of the country we do not have PTA
as we do have in other parts of the country. But we are trying
our best to have an organization of the kind for the
development of the college.
31. Health Services:
Right now we do not have any institutional health
service for the benefit of the students. When we hold eye care
camps and other health-related camps with the help of
different authorities we provide some specific services to the
students and to the community. But we are planning to have
permanent health service for the benefit of the students and
staff. Necessary communications are made already with the
Government of Assam, Department of health and medical
services.
32. Performance in sports activities:
In general sports category during the year 2005,
two events were held –

Football
b)
Volleyball
Students comprising four teams participated in Football and
Volleyball. Volleyball was played within the college campus.
Football was played in the Gauhati University field.
Zakir Hussain, a student of Higher Secondary was the Secretary
of General Sports in 2005.
33. Incentives to outstanding sports person:
Free education is given to meritorious students.
In admission matters also we provide relaxed norms for the
outstanding sports persons. In certain cases they are
encouraged to take part in different mega sport events.

i) Aparna Biswas who passed in 2005 got admitted in Calcutta
University.
ii) Debashree Datta who passed out in 2004 has come out as a
budding story writer.

Department of Geology
Three students secured first class in the TDC Final
Examination 2005.

Dimbeswar Konwar secured first class in BA (2+1) Examination
2005.
d)
Department of Philosophy
Paban Kalita a student of TDC Part-I (Major) participated in
Quiz competition held on 28 January and 5 September 2005 at
Saraighat organized by Directorate of Field Publicity Ministry
of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. He
secured first and third position.

i) Raju Ansari of the department passed out from NDA and
appointed Lieutenant. in Jammu and Kashmir.
ii) Manoj Bharali appointed as a faculty member in the
University of Arunachal Pradesh. He qualified both NET and
SLET.
iii) Yusuf Aziz – appointed as Additional Judicial Magistrate
under Govt. of Assam.
iv) Boki Barman is the advocate in Gauhati High Court.
v) Sarmistha Mahanta – An advocate, also doing LLM
vi) Yah Yah Majumdar – Doing Ph.D in ICAR Project under NEHU.

35. Activities of the Guidance and Counseling Unit
:
Information and Career Guidance Cell of Pragjyotish College,
Guwahati –9 – Due to its limited infrastructure, many
activities could not be carried out during the session
2005-06.
i) Regular Counselling of academic career were done by the
members of ICGC.
ii) On 26 August 2005, a counseling session of MBA by ICFAI
University was held. Under the presidentship of Dr. Arpana
Thakuria. About 85 students of Final year B.Sc. took part in
the session. Mr. Mrinal Baruah of ICFAI University answered
the different queries of students.
iii) Instituted orientation camps with the help of army, navy
and air force and thereby encouraged the students to join
Indian army, navy and air force
36. Placement services provided to the students.
Career Counseling is taking step in that
direction. Effort is on to hold campus recruitment for the
students.
37. Development programmes for non-teaching staff.
They are encouraged by the college to acquire
computer literacy and other proficiencies. In some specific
situations and personal needs we are making financial aids,
adjustable at later dates.

wishes to add.
The college is encouraging publication of all the field study
reports, seminar papers, and other publications from out of
the college fund. This has yielded enormous results. Some of
the books published by the college are taken care of by the
Assam Publication Board, a Govt of Assam organization. The
second editions of five books, already published by the
science society of the college, are brought out by Assam
Publication Board. In the matter of publication of valuable
books this college has already earned statewide name and
fame.We are also planning to publish more and more books from
the college for the benefit of our students, teachers,
researchers and general reading public.
