Year:  2005

Part – I

Plan of Action for the Year 2005

The plan of action for the year 2005 is virtually similar to the one for the year 2004. In fact our plan of action took a definite shape and momentum after the NAAC visit to the college in 2003. The following suggestions of the Peer Team are taken seriously, and action plan designed accordingly.

Main suggestions of the Peer team: as highlighted

  1. Up gradation of science labs.
  2. Improvement of the library position and regular verification of library stock.
  3. Construction of women’s hostel.
  4. Up gradation of computer Science labs.
  5. Methods of interactive teaching to make learning quite interesting for the students.
  6. Inter-departmental collaboration in literature subjects.
  7. Regular verification of college accounts.
  8. Teachers` self-appraisal reports are to be insisted upon.
  9. Taking step for students` feedback regarding the class and also regarding the college.
  10. Meeting with parents, teachers and alumni for reducing the dropout problem, and also for improvement of examination results.
  11. Up gradation of infrastructures and teaching aids for better teaching- learning process.

TO realize the above-noted needs as focused by the Peer Team the college has taken the following actions plans:

  1. IQAC has been activated.
  2. All the science labs are substantially improved.
  3. Preliminary works are started for the construction of women’s hostel.For this UGC assistance is sought.
  4. College library is substantially improved. Partial computerization of the library is worked out.
  5. Steps taken to have self-appraisal reports from the teachers.
  6. Feedback from the students collected.
  7. At least one meeting in a year with the parents is instituted. These meetings are convened by the individual departments.
  8. A good number of staff meetings are held for the improvement of teaching-learning.
  9. Substantial improvement in the infrastructure of the college is made in all levels.
  10. Computer Science lab is considerably upgraded.
  11. Step is taken to have a UGC network resource centre in the college.
  12. Step is taken to improve the college campus for a working playground for some specific sport events.
  13. Teachers are motivated to have the required proficiency in computer. At least 50% of our teachers are now computer-literates.
  14. Major portion of the administrative works are computerized.
  15. Extensive extension activities are encouraged amongst the students.
  16. Encouraging the cultural activities amongst the students.

Introduction of new academic programmes include the following:

  1. Introduction of two-year Master of Tourism Management course in postgraduate level.
  2. Tourism and Travel Management course in the undergraduate level as vocational course.
  3. Functional English in the undergraduate level as vocational course.
  4. Information Technology in the undergraduate level as vocational course.
  5. Mass communication & Journalism course started as career-oriented course.
  6. Fashion Designing course as career-oriented programme.

Up gradation of Existing Courses:

Steps are taken to up grade the following courses:

  1. Major course in Anthropology.
  2. Major coursed in Statistics.

Remedial Courses:

We have started remedial course especially in English for the time being.

Part – B

1.         Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the

Institution.

The following activities have been undertaken for reflecting the goals and objectives of the college.

1 (a) In order to acquaint the students of the college with the practical and the socio-economic aspects as required in the academic syllabi etc., the different departments held seminars, surveys, field-studies, workshops etc. in the different field of activities. While conducting these seminars, surveys, field studies, workshop etc. various government agencies and NGO’s were contacted for necessary co-operation. While conducting these seminars, surveys, workshop etc. importance was given particularly in agriculture, cottage industries, self-help economic programmes etc. specifically in rural areas.

(b) The seminars, surveys, field studies, workshops etc. conducted by the different departments are given as follows –

I.          Department of Anthropology:

a)      Seminars: A departmental seminar was held on the topic ‘Historical background of pre-historic Archaeology’ in the year 2005. The lecture was delivered by Junali Devi, Senior lecturer of Department of Anthropology, Cotton College, Guwahati.

b)      Surveys: Participated in preliminary census survey conducted at Higher Secondary level in Guwahati city.

c)      Field Studies :

i) Conducted field work for the study of social and economic life of the rural plain Karbi in the villageHajonbari situated near the urban center of Guwahati.

ii) Participated in fieldworks conducted at undergraduate level for the study entitled ‘Analysis of the Socio-Economic aspect and position of women among the traditional plain Karbi community of NARAKASUR in the urban context of Guwahati city of Assam.]

II.         Department of Assamese:

a)      Seminars : An international seminar was organized by the Assamese department on 4th, 5th, 6th November 2005 in collaboration with Asom Kalatirtha, Guwahati on the topic ‘The Ramayana : Its impact on our life and culture’.

b)      Field Study: A field study was organized for the benefit of the students on 4th, 5th, 6th November 2005.

c)      Workshop: A Recitation Workshop on Assamese Poetry was organized on 28-05-05 in collaboration with Dalit Sahitya Academy.

d)      A talk on ‘Women and Assamese Literature’ was delivered by Dr. Sailen Bharali, Head and Ex-Jawaharlal Nehru Prof. of Assamese department, Gauhati University on 09-04-05 Atulananda Goswami, eminent short story writer and critic delivered a talk on ‘Jogesh Dasar Galpa Alochana’ on 09-09-05.

III        Department of Bengali:

a)      Seminars : Departmental seminars were held on the following topics –

1) Kabi – ‘Krittibasar Ramayan O Janapriyatar Karan – Soma Sengupta TDC 3rd year on 20-09-05.

2) Oitibhasik Natak O Krishnakumari – Nibir Chakma, TDC 2nd year on 04-10-05.

3) Upannyes O Ithihas – ‘Madhabikankan – Soma Sengupta, TDC 3rd year on 19-11-05.

4) Adhunik Bangale Kabitar Samaybodh – Prabhati Chakraborty, TDC 1st year on 08-12-05.

5) Bengle Sahitteyr Adiparba – Charyapad – Rinku Barman, TDC 1st year 09-12-05.

IV        Department of Botany :

a)      Seminars: On December 2005 a departmental seminar was held on the topic “Mutation and its Role in Crop Improvement”. The paper was presented by Mr. Shravan Jha, BSC 3rd year Major student. The seminar was chaired by Dr. Arpana Thakuria, HOD, Botany.

b)      Field Study: From 13th November to 18th November 2005, teachers and students of Botany department went to Shillong and Cherapunjee to study the vegetion and Ecology of sub tropical conferous forest of Meghalaya, B.Sc 2nd & 3rd year students were guided by Prof. (Mrs.) S.Buragohain and Dr. R.K.Bora, lecturer of Botany department.

c)      Survey : Prof(Mrs) Ranee Das is surveying the Cyanobacterial Flora of Greater Guwahati since 2002 – Prof. (Mrs) S.Buragohain is surveying the ‘Exotic Flora of Angiosperms of Greater Guwahati’ since 2002.

Dr. R.K.Bora is surveying the Orchids of Kokrajhar district since May 2005.

V         Department of Chemistry:

a)      Seminars : A departmental seminar was held on 24th September 2005 on the topics –

1) Stereo Chemistry.

2) Organic Reaction Mechanism

B.Sc. Major Students participated in the seminar.

b)      Field Study: A study tour to Forensic Science Laboratory was arranged by the Department of Chemistry on 19th December 2005. Three teachers of the department have guided about 16 major students on the study tour.

c)      Talk : A popular scientific talk on “Forensic Science in the service of Society” was organized by the Department of Chemistry on 18th November 2005. The talk was delivered by Dr. Swapan Kumar Datta, Deputy Director, Forensic Science Laboratory, Guwahati

VI        Department of Economics:

a)      Seminar : The Economic Planning Forum under department of Economics conducted a socio-economic survey at Topatoli village of Assam and two adjoining village – Umsiang Mongpodan and Umsiang Miang of neighbouring Ribhoi district of Meghalaya.

A group of 30 Major students of TDC 2nd and 3rd year participated in the programme which was held on 23rd December 2005.

VII         Department of Education

a)      Seminar: A two-day seminar on Parental Empowerment was organized in the department of Education. Dr. B.R.Biz from Punjab University, and Kuladhar Saikia, IGP, were the resource persons in the seminar.

About 30 parents attended the seminar and a cordial interaction took place among the parents and the resource persons.

VIII          Department of English

a)      Seminar : About 10 departmental seminars were held during the year 2005.

IX            Department of Geography

a)      Seminar : Departmental seminars were held every Friday on local and national issues in the year 2005. Altogether 11 seminars were held.

b)      Surveys: Surveys were conducted at the following places in the year 2005.

1)      At Sikkim and Darjeeling

2)      At Kaziranga

c)      Field Study : Students were taken to the following places for field study.

1)      Sikkim

d)      Workshop : A workshop on ‘Environmental Awareness’ was held in the year 2005. It was conducted by Dr. A.K.Bhagabati.

X           Department of Geology

a)      Seminar : About 16 departmental seminars were held in the year 2005. They are as follows

XI          Department of History

a)      Seminars : A departmental seminar was held on 9th September 2005 on the topic ‘Asoka’s Dhamma’. The students of TDC 1st year Major and General participated in the seminar.

b)      Survey : A survey of historical monuments was carried out at Hajo by the Major students of TDC 1st and 2nd year on 29th November 2005. The survey was supervised by the Faculty members.

c)      Field Study : A local field trip to the Assam State Museum was conducted on 18th October 2005 by the Major students of TDC 1st, 2nd and 3rd year. It was supervised by all the faculty members.

XII          Department of Mathematics

            a) Seminar : Altogether 6 departmental seminars were held during the year 2005.

XIII         Department of Philosophy

            a) Seminar : Departmental seminars were held on the following topics -

1)      ‘The Common Characteristics of Indian Philosophy’ TDC 1st Year students – Dated 19-08-05.

2)      ‘Concept of Truth Function in Symbolic Logic – at a glance’. TDC 2nd year students – 20-08-2005

3)      ‘Radhakrishnan’s Concept of Intellect and Intuition’. TDc 3rd year students – 20-08-05.

b)      Survey : On 16th February 2005 a survey was conducted at Kahargaon Rani under the banner ‘Rural Women’s Upliftment Association, Assam’.

XIV        Department of Physics

a)      Seminars : A seminar was held on 10 November 2005 on the topic ‘Einstein and his Contribution towards Modern Science’.

Eminent scientists from North East Prof. (Dr.) Dilip Kr. Choudhury, Prof.(Dr.) Barindra Kr. Sarma and Dr. Sivanath Barman were the resource persons in the seminar.

There was a speech competition among the school and college students of greater Guwahati on the same topic.

Departmental seminars were held on 19 December on the following topics.

XV             Department of Political Science

a)      Seminar : A seminar was held on 19 September 2005 on the topic ‘Corruption in Public Life’ students of degree classes participated ad presented nine papers and there was an interaction among the students.

XVI           Department of Statistics

a)      Seminar : Departmental seminars were held on the following topics.

1)      Normal distribution – By Anjan Sarman – TDC 3rd year.

2)      Linear Programming – By Gitumoni Kalita – TDC 2nd year.

3)      Classical Statistical Inference – By Abhinav Baruah, TDC 2nd year.

XVII     Department of Sanskrit

a)      Workshop : One National workshop was organized by the department from 22 to 31 December 2005.

b)      Talk : A talk on, ‘Sanskrit impact on society and culture’ was delivered by Dr. Rajendra Nath Sarma, Prof. of Sanskrit, Gauhati University on 3rd September 2005.

XVIII   Department of Zoology

The college has to follow various academic programmes as initiated by Gauhati University from time to time.

Innovation in curricular design and transaction have been taken up in the following subjects.

We are to conduct the examinations as per the guidelines of the Gauhati University. But as far as practicable we conduct the examination in the college at our own to prepare the students for the final examinations of the university. Some innovations, however, are introduced in the in-house examinations.

a. (i) Ms. Shabeena Yasmin Saikia of Anthropology department is working in the project ‘ Asom Vishwakosh Prakalpa of Social and Culture Section.

     (ii) A new post doctoral research project has been undertaken by Dr. Parama Rajbongshi, Head of the Department of Assamese – ‘ A critical study of Khulia Bhaoriya, Important Folk Performing Art of North-East India – UGC – 2002-2005.

     (iii) Ms. Dula Saikia of the Sanskrit department has undertaken a project name ‘Language Information Service’.

     (iv) Prof. J.Patgiri, Head of the department of Geography has undertaken a research project on Impact and influence of Satra Institution to the people of Brahmaputra Valley.

     (v) A UGC sponsored Minor Research Project has been undertaken by Manjit Majumdar of Geology department from 1st December 2005.

b. (i) Prof. Jyotirmoy Sengupta, Head of the department of Bengali, completed and submitted on August 2005 his research project titled ‘Asamer Bangla Little Magazine Chotogalpar Prakhyapat O Kramabikas (1971-2000). He was guided by Dr. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Assam University, Silchar.

     (ii) Prof. J.Patgiri, Head of the Department of Geography completed his research project on ‘Socio-economic condition of Tribal Population of Undivided Goalpara district.

i) Shabeena Yasmin Saikia has been awarded Janaki Devi Cash Prize for securing highest mark in major among women candidates.

iii) Shabeena Yasmin Saikia has been declared as the Best Graduate in the year 1995 in Gauhati University.

b)      In view of the improvement of the college in respect of opening of new subjects in Post-Graduate level the library services have been sufficiently expanded to cover up teachers and students of the newly added faculties of the college.

24.  Computerization of administration and the process of admissions and examination    results, issue of CERTIFICATES:

 

The computer system has been introduced in –

a)      Admission Process

b)      Office Management

c)      Financial documentation.

d)      In other matters too.

 

25.       Increase in the infrastructural facilities :

 

             The laboratory of Computer Science department has been upgraded with central UPS and LAN.

 

 

26.         Technology up gradation:

 

            In practically all the administrative, financial and academic matters we have been resorting to technology up gradation.

 

            Vigorous step is taken to upgrade the technology in every level of the college management.

 

27.         Computer and Internet access and training to teachers and students.

 

Computer and internet facilities have been provided in collaboration with C-DAC to   

Provide training and computer literacy to teachers , students, and non-teaching staff.

 

28.         Financial aid to students.

 

              There is a special fund to provide financial aid to poor and needy students. A good number of students are given financial aid directly by the college.

 

29.         Activities and support from the Alumni Association:

 

              A section of alumni is engaged in helping the college in kind, if not in cash. Some of them are helping the college to develop the fish ponds and the college campus by earth filling works.

 

30.         Activities and support from Parent-Teacher Association:

 

              In this part of the country we do not have PTA as we do have in other parts of the country. But we are trying our best to have an organization of the kind for the development of the college.

 

 

31.         Health Services:

 

            Right now we do not have any institutional health service for the benefit of the students. When we hold eye care camps and other health-related camps with the help of different authorities we provide some specific services to the students and to the community. But we are planning to have permanent health service for the benefit of the students and staff. Necessary communications are made already with the Government of Assam, Department of health and medical services.

 

32.         Performance in sports activities:

 

              In general sports category during the year 2005, two events were held –

 

a)      Football

b)      Volleyball

 

 Students comprising four teams participated in Football and Volleyball. Volleyball was played within the college campus. Football was played in the Gauhati University field.

 

Zakir Hussain, a student of Higher Secondary was the Secretary of General Sports in 2005.

 

33.         Incentives to outstanding sports person:

 

             Free education is given to meritorious students. In admission matters also we provide relaxed norms for the outstanding sports persons. In certain cases they are encouraged to take part in different mega sport events.

 

34.         Students achievements and awards:

 

a)      Department of Bengali

i) Aparna Biswas who passed in 2005 got admitted in Calcutta University.

ii) Debashree Datta who passed out in 2004 has come out as a budding story writer.

 

b)      Department of Geology

Three students secured first class in the TDC Final Examination 2005.

 

c)      Department of History

Dimbeswar Konwar secured first class in BA (2+1) Examination 2005.

 

d)      Department of Philosophy

Paban Kalita a student of TDC Part-I (Major) participated in Quiz competition held on 28 January and 5 September 2005 at Saraighat organized by Directorate of Field Publicity Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. He secured first and third position.

 

c)      Department of Physics

i) Kavita Das (TDC 3rd year Major) Cadet Warrant Officer -

Attended National Camp at AFA, Dundigal, Hyderabad (20th June to 2nd July 2005)

Attended local camp at RBHS Mirza (12 September to 24 September 2005)

 

Achievements –

 

1.      The best in Drona Simulators.

2.      Best dancer and best in all obstacles.

3.      Best player in football and volleyball.

4.      Best anchor

5.      Safely able to fly the microlight aircraft.

6.      Good performance in skit shooting.

7.      Best debator award.

8.      Got selected for best cadet.

9.      Got second prize in poem competition conducted by college.

 

ii) Aditya Kr. Jha (TDC 3rd year Major) Cadet attended National Camp at Bangalore (Vaasu Sainik) from 16 October to 29 October 2005.

iii) Hafizur Rahman (TDC 3rd year Major) : Cadet  attended Local Camp at RBHS Mirza ( 12 September to 24 September 2005)

 

iv) Dilip Kumar Tiwari : (TDC 2nd year Major) Cadet attended Local Camp at RBHS at Mirza. Attended Local camp at Air Force Station, Borjhar

 

v) Golap Ahmed (TDC 3rd year Major) : Got 3rd prize in speech competition.

 

             f)         Department of Statistics

Gitumoni Kalita, TDC 1st year Major student and Anjan Sarma, TDC 2nd year student, both secured 50% marks in the Examination.

 

g)         Department of Zoology

i) Raju Ansari of the department passed out from NDA and appointed Lieutenant. in Jammu and Kashmir.

ii) Manoj Bharali appointed as a faculty member in the University of Arunachal Pradesh. He qualified both NET and SLET.

iii) Yusuf Aziz – appointed as Additional Judicial Magistrate under Govt. of Assam.

ix) Pramita, a 2nd year student attended NIC camp at Delhi and was given best dancer award threr and also at CAT camp.

x) Arpita, a 2nd year student attended NIC camp at Delhi and declared as best dancer. She also attended CATC Camp.

xi) Nazma, a 2nd year student attended NIC camp at Delhi and was given the best dancer award. She also attended CATC camp.

xii) Alpana Choudhury, 2nd year student attended Pre-RPC camp and CATC camp.

xiii) Harmeet Kaur, a 2nd year student attended CATC camp.

xiv) Silpi Sing of 2nd year attended CATC camp.

xv) Sumi, a student of 1st year attended Sikkim track.

 

35.         Activities of the Guidance and Counseling Unit :

 

Information and Career Guidance Cell of Pragjyotish College, Guwahati –9 – Due to its limited infrastructure, many activities could not be carried out during the session 2005-06.

 

i) Regular Counselling of academic career were done by the members of ICGC.

ii) On 26 August 2005, a counseling session of MBA by ICFAI University was held. Under the presidentship of Dr. Arpana Thakuria. About 85 students of Final year B.Sc. took part in the session. Mr. Mrinal Baruah of ICFAI University answered the different queries of students.

 

iii) Instituted  orientation camps with the help of army, navy and air force and thereby encouraged the students to join Indian army, navy and air force

 

36.         Placement services provided to the students.

 

              Career Counseling is taking step in that direction. Effort is on to hold campus recruitment for the students.

 

37.         Development programmes for non-teaching staff.

            They are encouraged by the college to acquire computer literacy and other proficiencies. In some specific situations and personal needs we are making financial aids, adjustable at later dates.

 

 

38.         Any other relevant information the institution wishes to add.

 

 The college is encouraging publication of all the field study reports, seminar papers, and other publications from out of the college fund. This has yielded enormous results. Some of the books published by the college are taken care of by the Assam Publication Board, a Govt of Assam organization. The second editions of five books, already published by the science society of the college, are brought out by Assam Publication Board. In the matter of publication of valuable books this college has already earned statewide name and fame.We are also planning to publish more and more books from the college for the benefit of our students, teachers, researchers and general reading public.

iii.                  An encyclopedia on Assamese culture.

iv.                 One book in English on Bhakti Movement and Shrimanta Shankaradeva.

v.                   Another Assamese book on the above title.

vi.                 Opening of BCA course.

vii.                Opening of Bioinformatics and other computer-related  crash courses under the DOEEAC

i.                     One seminar hall with LCD projector.

ii.                   One computer lad for the BCA students.

iii.                  One faculty room for MTM.
