Established on 1st September 1954, Pragjyotish
College is one of the premier institutions of higher education
in Guwahati as well as in the North East. From its modest
inception as an Arts College, Pragjyotish College has now
developed into its present status of a famous full-fledged
Degree College imparting higher education in Arts, Science and
Commerce. Moreover, the college has two Post-Graduate
Departments namely, Assamese and Tourism Management.
The College is permanently affiliated to Gauhati University,
and it registered under 2 (F) and 12(B) of the University
Grants Commission Act 1956. The Founder Principal Pandit
Tirtha Nath Sarma. The Arts stream of the college was
brought into the Deficit System of Grant in Aid of the Govt.
of Assam in 1958 and the Science Stream, in the year 1960. The
college was assessed and accredited by NAAC in 2003.
The college is most ideally situated on the river Bharalu in
the heart of the city and presents a most fascinating
panoramic view with the Nilachal Hills in its background. The
idyllic atmosphere prevailing in the premises of the college
holds out a quiet and sure promise of uninterrupted pursuit of
knowledge.
It is a long story of determined struggle for the
establishment of an enlightened society. Since its inception,
Pragjyotish College has been van guarding the cause of
education and moral uplift. Pursuit of knowledge has all along
been its avowed objective and it has justified its existence
despite all odds standing in its way. Dissemination of
knowledge has not been the sole objective of the college - it
is aiming to generate new values, relevant for the new
generation of people. The college has established it self as a
vibrant centre of learning having earned the credit of
producing a galaxy of distinguished persons at different
levels of public life.
